Extremism on the rise: making challenging films in a polarised world

Rue de Carouge 52, 1205 Genève
As populist messages continue to spread unchecked via social media, the influence of trusted news outlets and documentary films as watchdogs of political power diminishes by the day.
With rising self-censorship, shrinking funding, and growing reluctance from film festivals and broadcasters to showcase such films due to safety concerns, challenging documentaries are struggling to emerge and reach broad audiences.
In this panel, we explore why documentaries that expose extremist movements are more crucial than ever. Who is behind these films, and who finances them? What production and distribution obstacles do they face? And how should filmmakers and festivals navigate the security risks involved?
NB – Undercover: Exposing the Far Right will be screened the previous evening, on Sunday 9th at 19:15 at Espace Pitöeff – Théâtre. Please remember to book a seat for the event, even if you have an accreditation! Bookings open on February 13.
