Holding The Sky

Impact Statement
By promoting indigenous peoples as protectors of the earth with Brazilian government officials and by strengthening the message of Davi and Dario, we want their rights, their knowledge, their culture and territories to be acknowledged and protected. By addressing governments and international economic organizations, we want to combat the exploitation of remaining “wild nature” by ensuring better control of the origin of products (palm oil, wood, gold, soy, beef) and a higher tax on extraction, distribution and purchase, both in the South and in the North. But most of all, we want our film to set in movement thoughts and acts amongst a broad audience, to make people question economic growth as a measure of human happiness and progress. We want to encourage a more sustainable use of raw materials and promote an economy that respects people and nature, by appealing to the individual’s responsibility.

Holding Up The Sky aims to strengthen the voice of the Yanomami in Brazil so that their rights, their culture and their territories are recognized and protected.
Impact Goals
  1. To strengthen the voice of Davi and Dario Kopenawa and the Yanomami people at an international level, so that their rights, culture and territories are acknowledged and protected.
  2. To raise awareness amongst the younger generation of indigenous people.
  3. To combat the exploitation of remaining “wild nature” by better control of the origin of products coming from Brazil/Latin America and a higher tax on extraction, distribution and purchase.
  4. To set in movement thoughts and acts amongst (Belgian) youth, to make them question growth as a measure of human happiness and progress, and raise awareness about the risks of biodiversity loss.
Impact Strategy
  • Make our film available for Brazilian NGOs already working on actions, and possibly collaborate on a new campaign that lobbies for the protection of indigenous territories and/or the prohibition of illegal gold mining.
  • Organise local screenings for indigenous peoples via a mobile cinema travelling through the Amazon forest. This project is preferably set up in collaboration with and executed by indigenous peoples themselves.
  • Organise an event at the UN Climate Conference COP26 (1-12 November) in Glasgow. Invite UN officials to the screening of the film, with Davi and/ or Dario Kopenawa present, in order to gather an international coalition and find people to pressure the government externally.
  • Develop an educational program for a young (Belgian) audience focused on climate awareness, indigenous communities and the use and origin of products from the Amazon.
  • Launch actions in partnership with our distributor (Mooov), to accompany school screenings with challenges. Examples: a social media campaign with photos and a hashtag addressing our climate ministers, the implementation of a vegetarian day in schools, etc.
  • Organise grassroot screenings in cinemas and venues (cultural centres, libraries, museums, universities, etc), followed by a debate with the director and other experts/NGO representatives.
