In a cotton-growing village in Sudan, young Nafisa grows up listening to stories of heroic battles against British colonial rule, passed down by her grandmother, Al-Sit. When a young businessman, heir to a vast estate, arrives with plans to cultivate genetically modified cotton, Nafisa is drawn into a power struggle from which neither she nor her community emerges unscathed.
