Café des libertés: Women in international law
Although access to justice is a fundamental principle of the rule of law, it remains unequal. According to UN Women, fewer than 40% of women who experience gender-based violence seek help, and of those who do, many find their complaints are not properly taken up. Gender-based discrimination perpetuates inequalities that too often block victims of sexual and gender-based violence from seeking redress. This Café des libertés focuses on the use of international law to combat sexual and gender-based violence: which mechanisms are available to human rights defenders, and how can they enhance women’s access to justice?
