Café des libertés: Women in international law

Faced with persistent sexual and gender-based violence, how can we ensure women’s access to justice? This Café des libertés explores the legal instruments and protection mechanisms that can help bring about fair justice.

Although access to justice is a fundamental principle of the rule of law, it remains unequal. According to UN Women, fewer than 40% of women who experience gender-based violence seek help, and of those who do, many find their complaints are not properly taken up. Gender-based discrimination perpetuates inequalities that too often block victims of sexual and gender-based violence from seeking redress. This Café des libertés focuses on the use of international law to combat sexual and gender-based violence: which mechanisms are available to human rights defenders, and how can they enhance women’s access to justice?
