For nearly fifty years, Iran’s authorities have met popular uprisings with deadly force. The protests of 2026 follow a long pattern of repression, rendered harder to grasp by censorship that conceals the true scale of the violence.

From the outset of the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the Iranian state built its power on coercion: executions, ideological policing, the crushing of dissent, and violence as a governing tool. Over time, this hardened into a lasting system of institutional repression. What is unfolding today is not a rupture, but the latest and most extreme expression of that legacy.

Where God Is Not

Là où Dieu n'est pas

Taghi, Homa and Mazyar were arrested and interrogated by the Iranian regime. All three, through their actions and with their bodies as proof, exemplify the essence of what it means to resist and to be defeated. Is there any hope that the torturer will one day rekindle his conscience? Where God Is Not is a film of testimonies from those who have been scarred by the Iranian regime. It seeks to understand the workings of the totalitarian system in its most repressive aspects, i.e. imprisonment and torture, using the huis-clos and reconstitution as cinematographic formats.
