Since the Taliban took power in August 2021, the situation of Afghan women has steadily deteriorated. What tools does the international community have at its disposal to combat gender discrimination, which has been transformed into a political project? Should the situation be recognised as "gender apartheid"?

Since the Taliban took power in August 2021, the human rights situation in Afghanistan has continued to deteriorate. While a wide range of fundamental rights have been curtailed, the most obvious case is the systematic denial of the rights and freedoms of women and girls. As new decrees, policies and practices increase the Taliban’s stranglehold on half the population, what tools does the international community have to combat institutionalised gender discrimination? Should the situation of women in Afghanistan be recognised as “gender apartheid”?

An Unfinished Journey

Impact days 2023 Movie

Forced to flee their country after the Taliban takeover in 2021, four Afghan women leaders struggle to keep the world’s attention on the unfolding crisis, while coming to terms with what it means to have their power usurped and two decades of progress dismantled. From their distant exile countries, these four female leaders – past parliamentarians, ministers, and journalists – watch the Taliban strip women and girls of the right to be educated, to work and to participate in society. No longer in positions of influence, they are forced to reinvent themselves to continue the fight for a free and just Afghanistan. Can these women succeed when the world’s attention has turned to the following headline and even the greatest superpower has admitted defeat ?
