Pendant des millénaires, les femmes en Chine ont été contraintes à des mariages abusifs et interdites de lecture et d’écriture. Pour faire face à cette situation, ces dernières ont développé un langage secret appelé Nushu. Écrites en poèmes ou en chansons avec des stylos en bambou sur des éventails et des mouchoirs, ces lettres cachées ont lié des générations de femmes chinoises dans un système de soutien clandestin de sororité, d’espoir et de survie. Entre passé et présent, des rizières en creux et des villages ruraux aux métropoles animées, Hidden Letters suit deux femmes chinoises du millénaire qui sont liées par leur fascination pour le Nushu et leur désir d’en protéger les archives. Influencées par l’héritage de solidarité féminine de Nushu, les deux femmes s’efforcent de trouver un équilibre tout en traçant leur propre voie dans une culture patriarcale.

Impact Statement
Our campaign will create virtual internationally accessible spaces for women to weave a landscape, with art, that allows expressions of vulnerability, resilience, and complexity of experience. Through this, women will claim agency over their own stories to fight societal isolation.
Across history, marginalized groups crafted secret languages to resist oppression. Our 'Hidden Gallery' honors this legacy. The goal of our campaign is to empower women to validate their experiences by connecting through the medium of art.
Impact Goals
  1. As many campaigns on gender equality focus on external policy changes, our campaign intends to hold up women’s internal space where we
    2. struggle with gender suppressions secretly and quietly.
  2. The impact campaign will create opportunities to encourage, promote and support women’s creative expressions through music, poetry, painting, crafts, etc.
  3. Celebrate women’s art as a means of resistance and resilience. The impact campaign will culminate with the creation of a virtual museum of women’s hidden art with in-person screenings and 'tours show' that will travel through spaces where women and artists gather, from museums, to galleries, to universities to living rooms.
Impact Strategy
  • Create virtual internationally accessible spaces for women : The HIDDEN GALLERIES will include an AR component in which selected artists will be videotaped and will 'appear' with their art pieces allowing the viewer to hear directly about the artist’s inspiration and message attached to their art. The Instagram Live 'Hidden Letters Studio Series' celebrates artists who embody the spirit of Nushu in their work. The series features discussions with powerful feminine artists who inspire women to channel their experience into art.
  • Create space and opportunity for international 'hidden screenings', in which the film can provide inspiration for personal and political conversations among women.
  • Engage artists to host 'hidden screenings' designed to inspire conversation around the challenges, strengths and resilience of experience.
