Restituer l’art africain – Les Fantômes de la colonisation
From the end of the 19th century until independence, Western countries took advantage of colonial occupation to plunder African cultural goods and enrich their museum collections. Today, more and more nations are considering the restitution of these objects. The film provides a fascinating insight into the stakes involved in these restitutions, and the contradictions they imply for both the restituting countries and the looted nations. Following the path of Gou, the famous Dahomean statue on display at the Louvres, it shows just how difficult it is to free oneself from the weight of the colonial past.
