The Road to Bama is the story of a young intersex person living in Northeast Nigeria (intersex is a general term used for a variety of variations in which a person is born with reproductive or sexual anatomy that doesn’t fit the boxes of “female” or “male”). He was raised as a girl, but today identifies as a man. While living as a girl he was kidnapped from school by Boko Haram at the age of 12, married off to one of their commandants at 14, and managed to survive five years in captivity without anyone discovering his secret.

The film begins as a story of survival in the face of Boko Haram, but turns into a journey of self-discovery after he escaped captivity – but still found prejudice as a free person.
