Sisters Act
Across Europe and Africa, a network of Catholic religious sisters wages a quiet, international fight against human trafficking and sexual exploitation. At the heart of this film is the bond between Sister Rita, who runs the Casa Magnificat refuge in Rome, and Joy, the young Nigerian woman she once welcomed in, now an author and one of Italy’s leading anti-trafficking voices. As Joy begins to testify publicly across Italy about her experience, Sister Rita also becomes a leading voice among the sisters – supporting survivors while urging her fellow religious women to speak out about the injustices they witness in their daily work. In Lampedusa, Sister Antonietta meets every boat arriving from across the Mediterranean, offering care to those who disembark. Back in Rome, Sister Mayra supports transgender women in prostitution and women who have been trafficked, through creative and theatre workshops.
Sisters Act is a portrait of women, in Europe and within their own Church, who confront what Fortress Europe refuses to hear: that trafficking is not an aberration at the margins of migration, but a product of its injustice.
The impact goals and strategy, teaser and film team contacts will be posted here in February 2027.
