Holding Up the Sky

If the shamans stop dancing and life in the rainforest loses its balance, the sky will fall and crush everything beneath it. This wisdom is passed on in the Brazilian Amazon by every generation of Yanomami. But gold diggers pollute the rivers, shamans die, the rainforest perishes and the earth warms up. Davi Kopenawa, shaman, chief and well-known spokesperson for the Yanomami, has been fighting these threats for more than 40 years. Time and again, he travels the world defending his people against an endless colonization. Do the Whites understand that the fall from the sky will not only crush the Yanomami?

Impact Statement
By promoting indigenous peoples as protectors of the earth with Brazilian government officials and by strengthening the message of Davi and Dario, we want their rights, their knowledge, their culture and territories to be acknowledged and protected. By addressing governments and international economic organizations, we want to combat the exploitation of remaining “wild nature” by ensuring better control of the origin of products (palm oil, wood, gold, soy, beef) and a higher tax on extraction, distribution and purchase, both in the South and in the North. But most of all, we want our film to set in movement thoughts and acts amongst a broad audience, to make people question economic growth as a measure of human happiness and progress. We want to encourage a more sustainable use of raw materials and promote an economy that respects people and nature, by appealing to the individual’s responsibility.
