Makenya, a Dominican-Haitian teenager, gives up parties and dancing with her friends to find work. Her plans grind to a halt when she discovers an unplanned pregnancy. Living with her mother and grandfather among a sugar cane farming community, she witnesses her mother’s devotion to an Afro-Dominican spiritual movement and her grandfather’s fight for pension rights. Mechanisation threatens to displace them without compensation, and the family resists at all costs. Meanwhile, in an afrofuturist parallel dimension, Makenya embarks on a journey to harness her hidden power.
