April
Nina is an obstetrician in a maternity hospital in eastern Georgia. Following a complicated birth in which the newborn dies, the grieving father calls for an inquiry into Nina’s methods. The ensuing investigation risks exposing her clandestine activities, which give her life its only sense of purpose. Amid breathtaking rural scenery, Nina regularly travels from village to village, performing unauthorised abortions. This deeply committed work plunges viewers into the reality of women’s lives weighed down by a patriarchal tradition. April is co-produced by Luca Guadagnino and features music by the experimental composer Matthew Herbert.
