Switzerland’s Responsibility in Commodity Trading

Ticket

Wednesday 12 March – 18h30
Espace Pitoëff - Café du Festival
Rue de Carouge 52, 1205 Geneva

Switzerland - and Geneva in particular - is a global centre for commodities trading. What responsibilities does the country, and its national companies, bear regarding human rights and the environment in this transnational sector?

Switzerland plays a leading role in this field, yet its national regulations on human rights and the environment remain insufficient. As the regulatory framework evolves at both European and global levels, the spotlight is on Switzerland. In response, Swiss civil society has, for the second time, launched a popular initiative to reform the Constitution and strengthen corporate accountability. This discussion brings together human rights experts, civil society representatives, and voices from the extractive industry. Together, they will assess Switzerland’s responsibilities and those of its businesses, as well as the role of the Swiss Human Rights Institution in this area.
