Devi : A warrior’s tale of justice, reparation and healing

Rue de Carouge 52, 1205 Geneva
Nepal’s Civil War ended in 2006, but not for Devi; rebel warrior, mother and sexual violence survivor. As those in power try to erase rape from the history of the war, Devi has to battle her own demons before she can begin to build a movement to fight for justice.
The impact campaign around DEVI the documentary started even before the film was finished. The production itself played an important role in Devi’s activist work, supported by director Subina Shrestha.
Devi’s primary mission was to fight for social justice in Nepal by getting survivors of sexual violence formally recognised as war victims. Thousands of women around her had kept silent, ashamed and discouraged by the lack of institutional support. In August 2024 Nepal’s government finally passed a key law on Conflict-Related Sexual Violence (CRSV). The campaign around DEVI continues to work as a catalyst across Nepal for conversations on the issue, as thousands of women continue to come forward to seek recognition, justice and reparation.
