The Others

Ofelia de Pablo del Valle and Javier García Zurita

In Almería, the heart of Europe’s greenhouse economy, record-breaking exports and prestigious eco-labels present intensive agriculture as a model of sustainability. Yet the migrant workers who make this success possible remain largely invisible. Many report wage theft, unsafe conditions and abuse, while thousands live in informal settlements without water or electricity.

Through first-hand testimonies, clandestine recordings and years of investigative reporting, The Others reveals the gap between the promise of certified sustainability and the human reality sustaining Europe’s food system. Moving from the greenhouses and settlements of southern Spain to the institutions, retailers and certification schemes that shape the supply chain, the film asks a fundamental question: can food truly be sustainable when the people who produce it are exploited and excluded from this definition?
