Sara

Harde Samir

Sara Yusif is a Kurdish girl from Qamishli, in north-eastern Syria, now living with her family as refugees in Sulaymaniyah, Iraq. At the age of seven, she loses her right leg during a Turkish bombardment that also kills her brother Mohammad and leaves her brother Ahmad partially blind. Unable to remember the attack, Sara’s story is reconstructed through her parents’ testimonies, while her own voice emerges through her paintings and daily life.

As she undergoes multiple surgeries, learns to walk with a prosthetic leg, and returns to school, she gradually rebuilds her childhood. In 2022, she revisits her hometown and discovers that her amputated leg was buried alongside her brother. Back in Iraq, she organizes an art exhibition for child victims of war. Meanwhile, her family pursues asylum in Europe in search of safety and medical care, but after their application is rejected, Sara’s father leaves alone for Germany, hoping to reunite the family one day.
