Camels of the Sea

Vikram Singh

Camels of the Sea takes place in Kutch, Western India, where rapid industrialisation following the 2001 earthquake accelerated under Narendra Modi, then Chief Minister of Gujarat and now India’s Prime Minister. Ecologically sensitive mangrove coasts were transformed into ports, power plants and vast salt pans. For the Fakirani Jats, who herd the rare swimming Kharai camel, the consequences have been catastrophic. As migration routes disappeared and freshwater sources were contaminated, the Kharai population collapsed from around 5,000 in 2001 to fewer than 800 today. Nearly half are herded by Adam Abdrehman, whose survival depends on navigating an increasingly hostile landscape.

As his camels keep dying, Adam must choose between joining a collective legal struggle against powerful industrial interests or accepting their protection, raising urgent questions about development, power and what we are prepared to sacrifice in the name of economic growth.
