Iran: Voices of Uprising From the outset of the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the Iranian state built its power on coercion: executions, ideological policing, the crushing of dissent, and violence as a governing tool. Over time, this hardened into a lasting system of institutional repression. What is unfolding today is not a rupture, but the latest and most extreme expression of that legacy.
