The Blue Sweater With a Yellow Hole

Blue Sweater with a Yellow Hole is a documentary weaving together animation, observational cinema, and participatory filmmaking to show the effects of indoctrination on two Ukrainian children and their friends.

Edgy and evocative animated scenes draw the viewer deep into the children’s shifting identities, exploring themes of belonging and the impactful role of misinformation in shaping our views. The animation helps to protect the identities of those children, whose stories touch on sensitive topics such as sexual abuse or collaboration with authorities.

Observational scenes allow the audience to see the children as multidimensional individuals with beautiful paradoxes, not just as victims, showing moments of childhood wonder, joy, and adventure.

Together with children, we reflect on the question: is it possible to reimagine our own truths in the midst of false narratives?
