The Settlers

Los Colonos

In the early 20th century, three men set off on an horseback expedition  across the Tierra del Fuego archipelago at the request of a wealthy landowner, charged with securing his vast property designated by the State. The British lieutenant and the American mercenary are accompanied by Segundo, a mixed-race man, who realises that their real mission is to wipe out the indigenous people. Through breathtaking landscapes and borrowing from Western codes, The Settlers is a visceral confrontation with the myth of nationhood and the violence that accompanies it.

Felipe Gálves immersive first feature, which won the International Critics’ Prize at Cannes, takes a much-needed look at the colonial past, daring to reimagine its representation in the present and for the future.

This film received the Grand Fiction Prize at the FIFDH 2024.
