Yet the Festival remains a space for gathering and hope, highlighting collective approaches that lead to action. Discover the main themes of this year&#8217;s edition.<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:12px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>THE RISE OF EXTREMISM:<\/strong> <strong>A GLOBAL THREAT TO OUR FREEDOM<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>From the United States to Europe, radicalised political parties have gained ground on the world stage, unified by a common rhetoric that threatens our fundamental freedoms. Several films and Forums explore this phenomenon, including <a href=\"https:\/\/fifdh.org\/en\/festival\/programme\/2025\/film\/the-last-republican\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em><strong>The Last Republican<\/strong><\/em><\/a><em><strong> <\/strong><\/em>by Steve Pink, which follows politician <strong>Adam Kinzinger<\/strong>, at the forefront of denouncing Donald Trump&#8217;s responsibility for the 2021 Capitol attack. Shown in its European Premiere, the film introduces the Forum <a href=\"https:\/\/fifdh.org\/en\/festival\/program\/2025\/forum\/where-are-the-united-states-headed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Where are the United States headed?<\/a> featuring author <strong>Douglas Kennedy<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Exacerbated by social media, these shifts manifest in increasingly alarming hate speech. In the Fiction Competition, three feature films presented in Swiss Premieres highlight stories from around the world. <a href=\"https:\/\/fifdh.org\/en\/festival\/program\/2025\/film\/manas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em><strong>Manas<\/strong><\/em><\/a> by Marianna Brennand transports us to the Amazon; <a href=\"https:\/\/fifdh.org\/en\/festival\/program\/2025\/film\/sugar-island\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em><strong>Sugar Island<\/strong><\/em><\/a><em><strong> <\/strong><\/em>by Johann\u00e9 G\u00f3mez Terrero takes place in the Dominican Republic; and <a href=\"https:\/\/fifdh.org\/en\/festival\/program\/2025\/film\/norah\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em><strong>Norah<\/strong><\/em><\/a> by Tawik Alzaidi is set in Saudi Arabia. These films follow women determined to forge their own paths in a patriarchal world that aims to confine them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three discussions take the exploration further. Echoing the global impact of the Mazan trial, the Forum <a href=\"https:\/\/fifdh.org\/en\/festival\/program\/2025\/forum\/gender-based-violence-ending-silence-and-shame\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gender-based violence: ending silence and shame<\/a><em> <\/em>\u2014featuring journalist <strong>Giulia Fo\u00efs<\/strong>\u2014 sheds light on the shame that still too often weighs heavily on survivors. The film <a href=\"https:\/\/fifdh.org\/en\/festival\/program\/2025\/film\/writing-hawa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em><strong>Writing Hawa<\/strong><\/em><\/a><em><strong> <\/strong><\/em>precedes the Spotlight <a href=\"https:\/\/fifdh.org\/en\/festival\/program\/2025\/forum\/the-unwavering-strength-of-afghan-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The unwavering strength of Afghan women<\/a>, with director <strong>Najiba Noori <\/strong>and her mother, <strong>Hawa Noori<\/strong>, in attendance. The film follows British-Palestinian surgeon <strong>Dr Ghassan Abu Sittah<\/strong>, operating under bombardment in Gaza, as well as his advocacy efforts with institutions and the media.
